Have a nice day...

Did you see the report? July 4, MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP): Memphis International Airport is issuing uniforms of ’a more-soothing color” to security personnel? “Kevin McCarthy, the new federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration in West Tennessee, said his job is not just to make sure every passenger and bag are properly screened, but to make sure people enjoy traveling. McCarthy said they will start training as soon as August on the new approach to checkpoints, which includes a more systematic way of chatting with passengers.”

WOAH! Rewind. I’m going to sound like an old dude here but this just may be one of the primary problems in our culture. This guy thinks his job is to be nice to passengers and to assure him they have an enjoyable travel experience! WRONG! His job is Security! The job is not to chat with passengers or to make them comfortable but to get me on my plane as safely as they can. I could rant on this a week. It is absolutely unbelievable.

What’s next a “be nice to terrorists day”?Oh yeah, had the 9/11 hijackers seen that the security folks had on soothing blue uniforms they would have no doubt changed their minds. Had they just “chatted them up” a little maybe they would have seen the error of their ways.

Yes, I hope people have a pleasant travel experience and I want one too BUT when I go through security I want someone with laser-like focus and precise expertise who examines, probes and investigates. I want a pilot who knows how to fly a plane - if he’s a nice guy while flying fine - but I’d rather have an expert who is mean as snot than a Mr Rogers who doesn’t know how to read the instruments. It’s the stewards and stewardesses jobs to try to take care of my comfort.

Have I missed something? We seem to be a culture where everyone has forgotten their purpose. In a culture that thinks everybody should be happy we forfeit security and stop doing our jobs. So we have parents who want their children to be their friends so they don’t discipline them. Schools who are so concerned that the students be comfortable that the lack of discipline has made our places of public education a place parents fear sending their kids. Ministers and elders who are more concerned about their popularity ratings than the truth entrusted to them in God’s Word. And churches who market themselves right out of the gospel. All a misunderstanding of our purpose. And it all leads to individuals who don’t know that their purpose on earth is to bring glory to and be a faithful stewart of all the God has entrusted them with - soul, influence, and stuff.

You know I love joy and am a happy person - I love kindness and teach the gospel for what it is; Good News. So my rant isn’t about happiness or friendliness but about purpose.

Am I the only one that finds this strange? Have a become a ranting idiot (don’t answer that!)?
