“Nothing will do more for your spiritual life than developing the habit of memorizing God’s Word!”
One of the more resource-filled groups I receive emails from is PREACHER STUFF RESOURCE EXCHANGE from Dan Williams. He sends out materials, uses group think for solutions and to help other guys out.
This week he send out a post from Tommy South, who I don’t know, but whose material is outstanding. It is something ALL CHRISTIANS should benefit from. “Ten Fast Facts on how to Memorize Scripture”. He got them from David Murray an Old Testament Professor:
1. Start early. Your mind is generally fresher early in the day, so do your memorizing then.
2. Highlight. As you read, highlight, underline, etc. key words & phrases, which will make remembering them easier.
3. Use graphics. Visualize specific objects related to the text that will help you recall its contents.
4. Say it aloud. It's a known fact that the more of our senses we employ, the more likely we are to remember. (A friend of mine used to go into the church auditorium each Friday or Saturday & preach his sermon aloud in order to better learn it.)
5. Emphasize certain words.
6. Set a time limit. Determine that you have only "x" minutes to learn a verse or paragraph. This will help you focus & concentrate, since the mind will take as much time as you allow it.
7. Finish one verse or fact before moving on to others. Remember that cement has to set in order to become concrete.
8. Review often. You'll find that you lose less info each time you repeat your memorization.
9. Get someone to test you.
10. Practice. Anything we do regularly, we will do better.
