There Will Be Days Like That

There will be days that you will feel like the earth beneath you is crumbling. There will be days that you will feel like you didn’t do your best. There will be days that you will think the sermon missed. There will be days that someone will say something unkind to you. There will be days that an elder will be less than supportive of you. There will be days that you feel exhausted mentally, emotionally, and physically, because you have preached multiple funerals or had other additional tasks come your way. There will be days you will question your own work and your abilities. There will be days you will have struggles in your marriage, and with your family. Yes, sadly, and unfortunately, there will be days like that.

There will also be days when you feel good about your sermon. There will be days you feel like you hit a home run. There will be days that someone will walk up to you and tell you they love you and/or your preaching. There will be days that an elder will compliment you for your work and your efforts. There will be days when some young person will bring you a card, notes from your sermon, or a picture of you that they drew. There will be days when some young person will tell you they want you to be present for their baptism, even though they are only inviting a few family members and friends. There will be days that your marriage will be in a great place and your family will be healthy. There will be days that you will feel more positive about your work and your gifts from God.

Here’s the kicker. Sometimes, sometimes all of the thoughts mentioned above can take place on the same day! This is the thing about all of this. We must be careful that we don’t allow our image or even our thoughts about our work to be defined by one single day or one single event. There will be some days that are not great, and there will be some days that are wonderful. Live each day to the glory of God and stay strong in the not so good days, as well as the wonderful days!
