It's Heavy

“And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the Churches.” (1 Corinthians 11:28)

Paul felt it. You feel it. We all feel it. All of us in ministry understand what our brother Paul had in mind when he wrote these words.

I’ve often wondered about the exact circumstance at the time that caused him to feel the pressures of ministry. It could have been something in his personal life (finances, family, or faith).

Perhaps a well-meaning elder or member let him “have it,” about something he said, or did, or didn’t do. Maybe he had preached his heart out and no one responded, or even complimented his efforts. It also could have been his own self-awareness or dealing with the reality of his humanity and weaknesses.

All of us who try to do ministry understand that “apart from other things,” the weight of ministry can at times seem extremely heavy.

May I share with you a couple of thoughts that have helped me during times when ministry has been heavy?

Allow others to help. In addition to understanding how weighty ministry can be, Paul also knew that we need to help one another with burdens. (Galatians 6:1-2)

We can receive help and comfort from family, close friends, and others in ministry who will understand. Don’t try to bear the heavy weight of ministry alone. Make a phone call, send a text, or reach out to someone who can help.

Remember that as heavy as ministry can be, the weight of glory is far better. Most often, things are not as difficult as they feel at the moment. However, even at its most difficult moment, the heaviness of this life doesn’t begin to compare with the glory that will be ours because of our efforts for the Lord.

We are thankful for each one of you and we love you all.
