A Bad Review

A dear friend recently got his review:

“Have you ever thought about being a singer?” The reviewer asked. My friend was confused, “what?” “Yeah,” he said, “you could join The Monotones.”

Ouch! Bad leader! In no way was the constructive or helpful to my friend. In fact, not surprisingly, it discouraged him. And I hated it, because I know the man and his passion for life and sharing good things.

BUT I do want him to learn from there. Here is what I have observed, and if it is helpful, great. If not, you know how to hit the delete key:

Highly intelligent people give info! They are in the info business. And information is good, no, great when it comes to the Truth. But information presented without passion disengages the listener. That is why doctors, researchers, pharmacists are traditionally such bad presenters. They are just giving information, valuable information, potentially life-changing information. I know a lot of highly intelligent preachers who are not effective presenters. Yes, in Acts 2 Peter was giving the most exciting news mankind had ever heard, and the listeners were “cut to” or “pricked in” the heart (Acts 2). Just try to imagine Peter presenting that information in verses 29-36 with no passion. I think it takes extra effort for those of you who are so intelligent to connect. That effort should be made. That effort is a worthy one if you wish that valuable information to be transformational.

Thank you for being a vessel of that Information. If your review didn’t go that well this year, God bless you. The “bad review” may be on the “bad reviewer” instead of the reviewed. Don’t quit. Learn what you can from that review but don’t let it destroy your spirit. Continue to grow. Don’t quit and don’t quit growing.
