His Work

His Work

I’m guilty, and I know other preachers who are as well. In discussing the work we do, we sometimes speak in terms of “My work,” or “Our work.” In doing so, we inadvertently place the results, outcome, and success of this work on our performance, our capabilities, or our expertise.

In some churches this has developed into what appears to be a pastor system, or something akin to evangelistic oversight, where one man is in charge of everything. This approach to the work of preaching and ministry not only changes God’s plan, but it also brings a tremendous amount of stress into the life of the preacher.

We begin to think we are responsible for everything, that the effectiveness or success depends on us. When we come to the realization that we are not capable enough or good enough to do everything that needs to be done, it can cause us to rethink whether or not we desire to be a part of this work.

What if we approached preaching and ministry as God’s Work? That is in fact, exactly what it is. God initiated His plan long before any of us who are alive today were ever born. His Kingdom work flourished before we became a part of it, and it will continue to thrive long after we are gone.

As preachers, we are invited to partner with God in His work. We are blessed to be the clay pots that He uses to accomplish His purposes in this world. Brothers, we will do better and we will feel better about this work when we come to a fuller understanding of the fact that this is His work. We will be less likely to step out of the greatest work in the world when we remember that it all belongs to Him. Praise God for the blessing of being a small part of His Work!
