Hope Against Hope
Hope Against Hope
What does our brother, Paul, mean when he tells us that Abraham believed in hope against hope? Surely included in this exciting use of hope, he tells us that Abraham believed when there was no legitimate or intelligent reason to believe the promise from above. However, he trusted God and His Word fully. No doubt that there will be numerous times in our lives when there are excellent reasons for us to believe God. Yet, if we are honest, we will recognize that there are seasons, times, or moments in life when there seems to be no good human reason to believe. These are the times when we must believe in hope against hope.
How do we handle it when the world around us seems to fall apart, when the ground underneath our feet feels as if it is crumbling, when we are struggling in our family, when we are uncertain about our jobs, when we have had a disagreement with our elders, when someone is critical of our sermons or our families, when our finances are failing, when we are thinking about quitting, or when we are questioning our faith?
How do we get through when we learn about the murder of innocent children, the accidental death of a child, another war, when a family member has a severe long-term health issue, or we lose our mate or a child?
During these moments, we follow the example of the Father of the Faithful. During these difficult seasons, we trust God, believe His Word, and lean upon our Savior in hope against hope. If you find yourself in a difficult place this week, may the God of all comfort bring you the peace that passes all understanding, and may you trust Him in hope against hope.
