Overwhelmed?
Surely at times you are overwhelmed by the sheer immensity of this Work. I know I have been. There are the day to day tasks that it requires: visiting, studying, counseling, preparing. A couple of sermons must be crafted each week, two or three Bible classes. The push to be fresh in an internet world. The desire to respond deeply and thoughtfully to a question sent digitally that implies the want for a quick answer. The need to develop more leaders. The care of the church. The vastness of presenting the whole counsel of God. The temptation to post or reply or respond tit-for-tat online or in any confrontation big or small. The reality that we will be judged and our family will be judged more quickly and with greater severity than others. If you are not at times overwhelmed, you must not be doing it right.
If it’s getting to you, I wish to remind you of one simple verse: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10a).
Take a moment, step back, inhale, exhale, and remember who God is. You are not Him, so you cannot do everything. He is “Him,” and can. He is for you and on the side of all who strive to live for Him and will care for and take care of you. You need to know that while others might, He does not expect more of you than you can do. You need to know that you can accomplish all through Him. You need to know You need the stillness of the moment to let His Word sink into you, to let His peace cover you, to let His presence be your mace that leads before you,
Be still and know.
