The Rest of Your Life

Let’s face it. Preaching is just unique: If you are going to be effective, you have to work on this every week for the rest of your life! You will never reach a point where you don’t have to prepare, where you don’t have to study, where you don’t have to refresh your approach. When you’ve been preaching 50 years you still will need to do refreshes. If you don’t, you’re dead in the water.

So.

One, determine to like it. Determine you will continue to study and prepare and devote yourself to enjoying improving the rest of your life.

Two, don’t get too upset when you make a mistake, you are going to. I’m not saying to not try but to realize when you make a mistake trying it’s cause this whole thing is a learning process. Be patient with your own learning.

And, three, this is a reminder to keep at it. Keep growing. Keep improving. We listened to an 80 year old preacher today who talked about changing his styles of preaching over the years. This good man preaches to over 800 people a year where he’s been for 47 years. Wonder why? I don’t. He is true to the Word, deeply loves the church, AND KEEPS GROWING!

It’s work, but it’s worth it. Don’t quit. Don’t quit growing. Don’t quit studying/ Don’t quit improving. Don’t quit!
