A Preacher Poll
Things are kinda slow over here at the scoop blog. There are a few things I’ll post soon but today we take a break:
I know we deal with big-time serious stuff, the most serious, all the more reason we need to relax now and then (not only that, it is godly to do so)!
So the hot debate in the world of distractions the sizzling news is the cut for a playoff to replace the BCS. With 9 teams who have at least a plausible argument that they should have a shot at this year’s national championship the debate is hot. Sorry folks the BCS is around for at least 6 more years but it doesn’t cost to squabble. Maybe I’ll get enough votes that I can submit the “Preacher Poll” to the NCAA and they will hear our voices of maturity, stability and sobermindedness! So have some fun and vote away - the debate can rage in the comment section below:
Here’s my opinion. Give us a playoff, 3 out of four years at least one team has a strong argument why they should play in the big game. Here are my answers to the objections I hear most often:
It would extend the season: So, don’t. Play an 11 game schedule. Week 12 is the round of 32, the week of the conference championships would be the round of 16 (which would take us to 8 teams. The Bowl game week would take you to 4 teams and what is now the BCS National Championship Game would just be the championship game. Wanta make is really fun? Play a 10 game schedule (like they did when I was growing up) and include 64 teams! Nobody would cry foul that they thought they had a realistic argument to be the champions.
It would make the Bowl games less important: What in the world are you talking about? First of all could something be less important than some of the bowls we have now? The EagleBank Bowl, the magicJack bowl (featuring South Florida -v- Memphis). In addition with a field of 32 it would be more like South Florida -v- Florida in round one! Suddenly that game means something! The winner moves on.
It would cost too much: What? Have you considered how every round would make MORE, the TV money would skyrocket as every game is a must see (consider March Madness and how much more most people love football than basketball). And they’d pay anything for the annual true championship game. The deeper you go in the bowl series the bigger the bowl - the big daddies getting the better rounds.
It would hurt recruiting: My friend James claims this is a big reason. With 35 bowl games you end up with 35 teams going out on the recruiting circuit with a win: Not a bad argument. I mean see how Duke and North Carolina and Kentucky suffer with recruiting each year...ulhhhhh.
