Holiday Candies...
Is anybody else out there like me (man, I hope not)? I like food...I eat socially, I like to eat when I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I’m real busy, when I’m not doing a whole lot, when I’m traveling, or when I’m home.
But there are certain food that go with certain times and places. Like Holiday Candy! Yes!!! Easter I absolutely LOVE the candy shelled, marshmallow filled brightly colored candies (not the ones individually wrapped the ones made by Brach’s). I can easily eat a whole bag in one sitting! It is the only candy I actually look forward to another holiday passing so I can get these. Yum. Then when the fall rolls around I enjoy the black topped candy corn. Man they’re awesome. My first candy love had to be chocolate covered cherries at Christmas. It’s funny, I RARELY notice any of these candies at any other time than during that holiday. I found on line where I could buy the Easter candy in bulk (I’ll send you the address if you wish) but I really don’t want them now. You can get chocolate covered cherries about anywhere anytime now, even gas stations, but I don’t. I’m a holiday candy sort of guy.
I suppose just like you have Holiday Candy you can also find Holiday Christians. Some of these will show up Easter and Christmas, they’re the ones who think the only flowers ever in the church building are lilies and poinsettias. I wish these folks could experience the joy of dedicated faith and try to encourage that when I see them. But there are the holiday Christians who show up only at other times - like when there is a crisis in their life or the country. I knew one guy who used to show up at church every year about 3 weeks before camp - I called him a “camptime Christian”. We had one fellow at a place I preached at who always showed up a couple of weeks before the church started it’s rec league basketball team - you had to be a member to play - took me a while to figure what he was up to out. There are Holiday Christians who show up every Sunday. Yes, they are there, but through the week you’d never guess they loved the Lord. If you looked at their bank book, their business dealings, their language, their viewing habits, or how they treated others you’d never suspect them to be a Christian. They too are Holiday Christians.
I love Holiday Candy and I love Holiday Christians but I sure wish I could find both a little more often! I think if you’ve not had a chocolate covered cherry you ought to try one but if you’ve not experience a dedication Christian life you have really missed out! Cry out and let me know if you need help.
