BEST FRIEND!

While attending FHC I was a part of the Preacher’s Wife’s Club.  Its mission was to encourage and inform us young ladies some of what we might expect when marrying a preacher.  I must be honest with you, some of the happenings reported, scared me to death!  I had been a Christian for only 4 years and was 17 years old. They relayed stories about houses, in which, most elders’ wives would not dwell, expectations for preachers’ children, that were unreal.  There were also happy stories about how generous fellow Christians were with the fruits of their gardens, hand me down clothes, and friendships. I, being a young lady, thought surely this won’t happen to us?  God has truly blessed us through the years being loved by so many and treated graciously. I was blessed by this group of seasoned ladies who helped me grow.

Yet, at one of our meetings, one of our sponsors informed us not to have a best friend in any congregation.  I did not agree.  I loved her dearly and learned much watching her example.  Hazard being temptation would or could be we would focus only on our BFF and neglect others.  I don’t know about you, but I need a friend who can understand a woman’s point of view!  Does this mean I should give away secrets entrusted to me?  Does this mean I should put my husband down to this best friend? No, it means I need someone’s companionship and encouragement whom I can trust! (Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake), Jesus even had those whom he called beloved! John was amongst his closest companions. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were some of his closest friends. (John 11:1-3) Jesus had his chosen 12 around him, continuing to share God’s love and encouraged them to remain strong!

I find encouragement in having a close friend or friends to help me stay focused on the goal, at times to get me out of my pity party and help me grow in my faith.  I pray that you can find encouragement in a “best friend” that will help you grow in God’s word, offer comfort when needed, and even tell you what you need to hear not what you want to hear.

Keep fighting for our Lord,
