Who Encourages Me?

Romans 12:7-8 says, “if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully”. As preacher’s wives, we try so hard to do ALL of this. But who will do this for us? It’s interesting how many people think our cup is always full and ready to pour out to others. Who do we turn to? What do we do when we don’t have anything left to give?

What do I do when I’ve run out of energy, emotion, and patience? Rest, rest, and more rest. Jesus was a great example of resting and getting away when he needed to.  When there is always more that needs to be done, it’s hard for us a minister’s wives to stop. Can I say it again. It’s hard for me to stop! But If we don’t get away, take some time, or stop; we will be drained dry.

Of course, turn to God first. Philippians 4:19 says, “God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus”. God supplies us the mental and emotional tools we need to cope with anything. A continual prayer line to God is essential.

Who else can help us? I confide in a few close friends who actually don’t go to my congregation. I find it helps for them to not know some of the people, places, and events I might share with them. They don’t have emotional ties to any of these except me. They have a lot of encouragement without judgement. My friends from “afar” love me and fill me up.
