Just A Church Secretary. by Brendan Chance
As Administrative Assistants Day arrives April 21 this might be a time to pause and appreciate those who serve as “The Church Secretary.” We are thankful for the writing skills of our guest poster Brendan Chance.
She’s just a church secretary. What’s the big deal you might ask? It’s just a Sunday bulletin? Maybe a few phone calls a day? Doesn’t seem like much. A few hours a week. She’s just a church secretary, after all. My friend, let me tell you about our church secretary.
She is “His feet”. Our secretary is a worker. She arrives early and stays late. You may not have noticed that. She still at the church building on Wednesday night after arriving at 8 that morning. That’s because she didn’t want you to.
She is “His hands”. Yes, she has a paid position serving the church, but she also serves on her own time. She labors to lift others up with her time and effort. She serves in ways that go unnoticed. That’s the way she likes it.
She is “His ears”. She drops everything when her phone rings. No matter what is going on in her life when you call you are her world at that moment. She listens for needs, opportunities, and people who are hurting. Oh yes, she is indeed “His ears.” You may not have noticed but she noticed you.
She is “His eyes”. She notices when you miss an assembly and prays for you. She sees your ministry and encourages others to join. She watches the financials and is the first line of protection for all the church’s works. You may not have considered that before, after all she’s just the secretary.
She is “His Head”. She thinks about how to get you involved and closer to God with information. She is a sounding board for your preacher and elders. She’s the brains behind more than you realize.
Our church secretary is all that and more. She’s “more precious than jewels” and “a God-fearing woman who is to be praised!” – Proverbs 31
You’re right though, she’s just the church secretary. That’s the way she likes it and we do too.
Thank you for being His feet, hands, ears, eyes, and head to us (1 Corinthians 12).
We love you more than words!
Brendan Chance
