How Can Preachers Help?

You may have preached about goals or resolutions on Sunday. You might have begun the New Year by telling your folks that this New Year offers the chance to start again. But what about us? How can we help those who hear our words reach their goals? May I offer a few suggestions that we might be able to use as we seek to help our families and other Christians grow in their faith?

SPEND TIME IN PRAYER. Brothers, how often do we approach the Father’s Throne on behalf of our wives, children, and other family members? How often do we ask God to help our people grow into the image of Jesus? In addition to praying, it would be of great encouragement to let people know that we remember them specifically in our prayers.

OFFER SUGGESTIONS. As we seek to help others reach their goals, we can provide resources and tools that have been helpful to us in our life. Maybe it’s something we’ve read or listened to that has been a particular help to us that we believe would encourage someone else. Specifically, we can share articles and ideas with our elders that will assist them in the work of shepherding the flock.

ONE ON ONE TIME. Perhaps one of the great ways we can encourage others in their spiritual growth is to sit down with them to talk about our walk with God. Maybe you know someone who is struggling right now because they’ve spoken with you in the past. When was the last time you asked them how they were doing? One of the greatest gifts we can offer to others in the gift of our time. We can be a great strength just by being there for someone.
