Preaching Goals

How did I do this, this long without ever writing it out? A late-night recently it just hit me that I have never in a formal manner written out the goals of my preaching. I suppose I’m the only one, but I may not be. This is my list with my distinct reasons for each being on the list. Feel free to use any you want. If you already have such a list and are willing to, share it below. If you do not and this motivates you, share below if you will. If you have not had one, I’d be interested in knowing that too.

10 goals of my preaching:

To lift up Jesus and show Him to be the Son of God and only hope of humans

To grow the faith of individuals who hear my lessons

To preach in a manner that helps people believe THEY can understand God’s Word and God’s Will on their own (that it doesn’t take a professional or a scholar)

To always speak Truth and for every lesson to be strong in the Bible

To help people desire to go deep into the truths of the Bible

To provide practical guidance for daily living

To encourage and engage - to delight so that people WANT to listen to the Message of the Word of God.

To preach in a way that attracts people to Jesus rather than pushes them away

To preach in a way that challenges people to do more for the Lord with their talents

To preach in a way that increases people’s love for the church

To preach what I strive to practice in my personal life, but not to withhold a truth because I struggle to live up to it as I feel I ought

Thinking through your preaching may help you clarify it and may extend and focus your ministry.
