We All Need a Little Help Sometimes

In our study of Exodus 17 this week we discussed Moses holding up the staff while the Israelites were fighting Amalek. There are numerous interpretations dealing with the staff being held in the air.

Some believe it is a symbol of prayer. Others think it has something to do with a curse God place on the Amalekites. Whatever it means, there is no doubt that it represents the presence of God. Moses wasn’t down in the midst of the battle with Joshua and the people. He was standing in the presence of God. Coupled with the help he received from Aaron and Hur we learn a great lesson about the war we are waging to defeat our enemy.

As preachers we all have personal battles, struggles that we deal with on a daily basis. It can be a major crisis in our lives, or it could be that irritating skirmish that keeps us from being “all in” for God.

Whatever battles you are facing right now, there are a couple of lessons we can learn from this moment in the life of Moses.

First, we are promised that no matter what we are dealing with in life, God is with us. He is with us in our fight against the enemy. He is with us when we are struggling in our relationships. He is with us when we are spiritually weak. He is with us at all times.

Dear brother, don’t ever forget that God is with you. Cast all your worries, your burdens, your concerns on Him, for He cares about you.

Second, we need others to help us. Just as Moses got tired, and needed help, so do we. As you know, our work is emotionally draining. After a full day on Sunday we can feel as if there isn’t anything left in the tank. That’s when we need other so help. It may be your wife, other family members, close friends, or other preaching brothers.

Don’t be afraid to lean on others when you feel worn down. God blesses us with family and friends to help us endure the weariness of the battle.

Take courage, dear brothers. Keep fighting. God and His people are with you!
