Taking Your Eye of the Ball
Did you watch the World Series?
It was a rough night for Dodgers catcher Will Smith. Game four of this year’s World Series was on October 24. Going in the Dodgers were leading 2 games to one over the Rays. It was the bottom of the ninth the Dodgers up 7-6, two outs, and a two-two count. One pitch and the Dodgers can take a commanding 3-1 lead in the series. Brett Phillips hits a single to right-center field. Kevin Kiermaier scored from second but the ball kicked off center fielder Chris Taylor’s glove for an error, Arozarena, who started the play at first base, steamed around third and headed for home.
Taylor’s throw home was cut off by first baseman Max Muncy, whose short relay was a little to the right of catcher Will Smith but manageable. As Smith moved to take the ball and make the tag, you can see it, Smith glances away for a nano-second, or as the commentator says “Smith took his eye off the throw.” The ball slide past him and the runner scored the game-winner.
I figure some of you have had some rough nights or days this year as well. In a year unprecedented for ministers we have seen shut-downs, fears of government intervention, shootings, riotings in our towns, political drama, and more. If you’ve contemplated quitting a few times, we understand. May I call you back? satan would like nothing more than to provide enough Taylor-made distractions to have you take your eye off the ball. If any of the above has got you down, it’s understandable. But shift your focus, get your eyes back on the main thing. Remember we do this because we love the Lord. As I encourage you to keep heart tonight I’m reminded of the words by Helen Lemmel.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace
Hang in there. The best is ahead.
