If you are afraid of hard work, if you don’t like people or don’t care about them, if you aren’t a fan of studying, if you get nervous around crowds, if you don’t enjoy surprises, preaching and ministry might not be the best profession for your life.
You see, if we believe what Paul said to Timothy about fulfilling our ministry the thing is, the work of the preacher is a lot of the above, but one thing it is not, is boring. One of the primary reasons it isn’t boring, is because there is ALWAYS something else to do. There is always another task just around the corner.
It might be a funeral within the next few days, or someone to visit in the hospital, or a couple who needs counseling, or a Bible study with a non-Christian, or attending an event (ballgame, school program, etc.) of one of the young people, or a meeting with the elders, or a shut-in who needs special attention, or an article to write for the publication of a friend, or a podcast, or a benevolence case, or a committee who needs you to meet with them, or planning a special event (VBS, Camp, etc.), or a thousand and one other responsibilities (opportunities).
In addition to all this, most preachers have the joy of being married and having children, and/or grandchildren. We all want to make our family a priority in our lives, and rightfully so.
And…let’s not forget the preparation of two sermons and a Bible class or two. These key responsibilities come around every week. One month of sermons and classes could be equal to writing an entire book. Think about writing twelve books in one year!!
We are richly blessed to have full lives. Why in the world would anyone ever want to quit?
