The Uniqueness of what You do
He’s a decorated military man with two PhD’s. A professional man who has owned multiple businesses and who has taught on the college level. A mature man who is engaging in one-on-one conversation. Yesterday this accomplished mature professional man preached his first sermon. There were 30 or so in the audience. It was an excellent lesson, full of scripture, well outlined, on sin. But one thing stood out. He was nervous, scared even. He’s presented before investors, committees, and students, BUT here, as he preached, he was anxious, edgy. This takes nothing away from his lesson. But it does remind me of the uniqueness of what you do every week. There is just something different about standing before people with an open Bible. It is awe-inspiring, intimidating. It can reduce the intelligent down to fumbling and the confident to faltering. To hold the Light before others, to proclaim “thus saith the Lord,” to unfold God’s plan for man. And, you, do, it, every, week! Don’t let it become blasé to you. Treasure the Treasure. Thank God for whatever gets you up there and through it each week. Remember the thrill, the nerves, the awe of it all. Go back to when you first began and thank God for where you are. What you do is monumental. The bumper sticker says “Teachers Touch the Future.” I would remind you “Preachers Touch Eternity.” I’m thankful for that thing you do. Don’t quit.
