Preach the Word All the Time

Preach the Word All the Time

One potential reason for preachers becoming discouraged is when we lose focus on our primary assignment and become distracted by other matters. Not that these matters are unimportant, but they are not our primary focus.

My primary focus should be preaching God's Word if I am a preacher. In our Preach Today Podcast this week, we discussed Paul's charge to his young protege Timothy. The central command in this charge is to preach the Word. Yes, he tells us to fulfill our ministry, but our primary work is preaching the Word.

It's been a blessing to preach in Alabama this week. It's been great seeing many old friends, making new ones, and spending some special time with several preachers. As always, it's been a blessing to be with my brother, who is also preaching in the area.

Driving into town the other day, I turned to the radio to listen to the sports talk radio station, and surprise, surprise, they were talking about football. In the state where we grew up, people always talk about football. If it's not football season, it's spring training and recruiting, but it's always football.

Our brother, Paul, instructed Timothy and all of us who speak God's Word to preach it in season and out of season. That means all the time. As brother Marshall Keeble once said, "It means, preach the Word when it's popular and when it's not!"

Whether we are engaged in the act of preaching, preparing sermons, praying for sermons, or thinking about Sunday, our minds should always be focused on preaching.

It seems to me that the more we focus on preaching, the less time we will have to become discouraged. Aren't you glad our God chose to use what the world deems foolish to save humanity? So keep preaching, brothers, all the time!!
