Something New Every Day

Monday - Clock in at 8, clock out at 5.

Tuesday - Clock in at 8, clock out at 5.

Wednesday - Clock in at 8, clock out at 5.

Thursday - Clock in at 8, clock out at 5.

Friday - Clock in at 8, clock out at 5.

Next week, repeat.

Said no preacher ever.

A minister’s work week is more likely to be 80 hours than 40 hours. For those who get chided that we only work one day a week, it can be from needling to angering. You take it. But you wish you could tell about all-nighters at hospitals, about counseling into the wee hours of the morning, about 40 days straight without an off day, about vacations cut short or canceled for a funeral, and about ballgames that your kids played in that you missed.

But the fact is. That to avoid putting gizmos on sprockets, to avoid shuffling paperwork, to avoid the monotony that 9-5 can be, to avoid the same-old, same-old, there is probably not a life better than ministry. It is an adventure. You can plan your day but a phone call, a drop-by just to talk, or an email can change it in a heartbeat.

I love that it’s something new every day! No monotony in this position ever.

You can grow weary of interruptions or you can see that these place you square in the middle of people’s lives, in their hurts, in their joys, and in the most significant moments of their lives. And, ultimately, squarely in the center of God’s Work. I pray you will see the value of the grand work you are doing and feel blessed and not burdened in it.

Thank you for being God’s person on the spot!
