Learning to Listen
Learning to Listen
Preachers talk. A lot. A whole lot. Some of us talk a lot more that we should. Some of us seem to have trouble with quietness. We think that our words should fill the air. I remember our Dad saying about a preacher one time, “He seems to sure enjoy the sound of his own voice!”
There’s nothing wrong with talking, but we would do well, and we could learn a lot more if we would listen more.
We could learn about the hearts of people.
We could learn about the hurts and pains of people.
We could gain wisdom from those who are older.
We could gain insights into the culture of our times from those who are younger.
We could be reminded of the simple joys of life from children.
We could learn what people need in their lives.
We could learn more about our world.
We could learn where people are in their walk with God.
Quietness has a way of calming our frustrations and bringing rest to weary souls.
In listening to the Word of God, we can gain spiritual depth, comfort, and the peace that passes all understanding. When God says that we should be still, it is for our benefit. It allows us to know Him even better.
Is it possible that we are so busy wanting to be heard, that we fail to listen to what we need to hear? If you are struggling this week, take some time to listen. Listen to the people that God has allowed to be in your life. Above all, take time to hear the Word of God.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
