Don't Ever Give Up

Don’t Ever Give Up

A lot of people who read this post each week will remember these words spoken by Jimmy V at the Espy Awards Ceremony in 1993 when he concluded his speech by saying, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.”

Some others have also read the words spoken by Winston Churchill in the graduation speech he made at Harrow School in England in 1941. “Never, never, never, never -- in nothing, great or small, large or petty -- never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense…Never never never give up.”

These are inspiring words for any age. However, as you all know this thought was given to us by the Holy Spirit long before Jimmy V or Sir Winston came on the scene. We find this inspiring sentiment in words like, “Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary.” (Galatians 6:9) “Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.” (Psalm 27:14) “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) “But you, be strong and do not [c]lose courage, for there is a reward for your work.” (2 Chronicles 15:7) “Wait for the Lord; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.” (Psalm 27:14)

To be sure, many men of God have considered quitting their work for the Lord. Consider Jeremiah. He said he wanted to quit but he could not because of the fire in his heart (Jeremiah 20:9-10). You may find yourself in a place today where you wonder if it’s worth it. Our encouragement is to give it one more try. Pray about it one more time, talk to one more person who brings you courage. Remember that the Lord needs you in His service. Don’t ever give up!
