IT'S ALL ABOUT JESUS
Recently, while preaching in East Texas, I was standing in the lobby of the church building before Bible class started, spending some time getting to know the beautiful people in the church. A wonderful Christian sister came in with her two grandsons. After meeting them, I overheard the following conversation. The grandmother asked the two boys if they wanted to go to the class with children their ages or did they want to go in the big people’s class with her. One of the boys looked at her and said something like this, “Is this class in here going to be one of those Jesus classes?” I think the grandmother looked at me for a response???” I said, “It sure is going to be a Jesus class.”
The more I have thought about that brief conversation the more it has occurred to me how important that question really is for all of us who teach and preach. Are the classes we teach Jesus classes? Are the sermons we preach Jesus sermons? Are our church ministries/programs all about Jesus? Do we focus on our Lord when we come together to worship?
As many of you who will read this know, we have been studying the book of John on Sunday mornings for the last part of 2009. We have made it all the way to John 7 Our theme for our study has been John 20:30-31, “Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” If we have learned anything it is that the book of John is all about Jesus. It teaches us about the words, the works, and the ways of Jesus (three point sermon outline, preachers).
The more we focus our lives on Christ, the less we will focus on our own problems, concerns, desires, etc. I love the lyrics to the song, “There’s Just Something About That Name.”
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
There's just something about that Name
Master, Savior, Jesus
Like the fragrance after the rain
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Let all heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away
But there's something about that Name.
Dear God please help us to focus our lives on Your Son. Help us to do our part to make sure that all of our classes are Jesus classes, and that everything we do is about Jesus.
