Our Father's Inheritance

It’s been nearly a year ago now since Dad passed away. Everyone reading this post who has lost a parent knows it really isn’t any easier after a year. The past year has been the toughest year in my life for a number of reasons. Losing Dad is at the top of that list of reasons. One of the difficulties associated with losing a parent is dealing with the inheritance. My Dad was not a wealthy man, as the world looks at wealth, but he did make a few wise investments along the way.

We are finally nearing the end of settling Dad’s estate, and at times it has been unpleasant. All of the children have acted just as Christians should and Dad would be proud. However, due to some laws in the state of Alabama, there have been some unpleasant issues that we have had to endure.

Going through all of this has made me realize how blessed we are to be Christians. Being a part of God’s family is so much easier than being a part of an earthly family. Receiving our Father’s inheritance is so much easier than any inheritance we will ever receive on this earth.

Our Father’s Inheritance is Divided Equally Among All the Heirs

There are no laws that state that a certain amount must go to specific individuals. Jesus told a story about how everyone receives the same pay regardless of when they became a part of God’s family (Matt. 20:1-16). Every child who is faithful to Him will receive an equal share of our Father’s Heavenly estate.

The Attorney is a Friend to Every Heir

There will not be any lawyer saying, “I’m sorry I can’t answer that question because I don’t work for you.” Jesus will plead the case for every child of God.

First John 2:1 reminds us, “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” Isn’t it wonderful to know that our best friend will also be the one who approaches the throne in our behalf?

Our Inheritance Has Already Been Prepared

Jesus said that He was going to prepare our inheritance for us and that He would come again to take us to receive our heavenly reward (John 14:1-3).

Our Inheritance is Perfect

Because Jesus died for us we will receive an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you.” (1 Pet. 1:1-4)

We Can and Should Share the Inheritance with Others

We must not be selfish when it comes to this wonderful inheritance. We have the blessing of being able to share it with as many people as we possibly can. Our fellow-heir and brother in the Lord, the great Apostle Paul expresses to the Ephesians what should be the sentiment of every child of the King. “To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ” (Eph 3:8).

It is a tremendous blessing to be a child of God and an heir to so many marvelous blessings in this life (Eph. 1:3). It will even be a greater joy to hear the words of our Savior when He says, “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master” (Matt. 25:23).

Dear Father, we thank You for the gift of salvation. We thank You for the promised inheritance that every faithful child will receive. Thank You God for providing for us a kind and just representative in the person of Jesus. Help us Lord to share the Good News of this inheritance with everyone around us. In the Name of Jesus who saves us we pray, Amen.
