Your Father

Did your father make you cry? Your heavenly Father won’t: He puts your tears in His bottle (Psalm 56:8). Did you ever feel like your dad wouldn’t listen to you? Your heavenly Father listens! From His temple He hears your voice (Psalm 18:6; 3:4; 5:3; 40:1; 69:33). Did your father remind you of your past wrongs? Your heavenly Father freely forgives. He is the one who lifts our head (Psalm 3:3; 32:5). Are you afraid of your dad? Your heavenly Father protects you and provides refuge (Psalm 25:20; 28:7; 27:3). Did your dad leave you to face hard things alone? Your heavenly Father never will: He walks with you through valleys (Psalm 23:4). Did you always feel like your father’s attention was divided? Your heavenly Father is YOURS (Psalm 63:1).

I had one of the best fathers in the world. It was because he “looked” like my heavenly Father. I grew up understanding with so much more clarity about who God is because my dad did his best to act like Him. But I’ve often thought how sad it is that many dads in this world look nothing like the heavenly Father. Studying through the Psalms, we see a picture of who God is on every single page. The verses above are just a tiny bit of what we see portrayed about God. We need to encourage the fathers in our lives to step up to the plate and see their great responsibility. We need to help uphold them in their tasks and help them to see that the father that they are to their children will help them truly see God, with heavenly eyes, as their good heavenly Father. And we need to gently help them see that the father that they are here on earth could also, sadly, make them want nothing to do with their heavenly Father.
