Well, There’s Another Nice Mess You’ve (I’ve) Gotten Me Into

Laurel and Hardy were actors during the silent film era and after.  They played off of each other in their slapstick comedies.  Something would happen, usually caused by Laurel, and Hardy would respond with “Here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into.”  Laurel’s response was to cry and say he didn’t mean to.

We often get ourselves into messes.  Some by our choices, some by the choices of others, but we cannot let them cause us to lose heart.

David got himself into a lot of “nice messes.”  Adultery, murder, lying, deception, bad parenting and a bad king at times.  But instead of fretting and bemoaning the “messes,” he sought out God and His forgiveness.  

1 Samuel: 13:14

“But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.”

Acts 13:22

And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who will do all my will.'

David was a man after God’s own heart because he didn’t give into his despair and grief over his sin.

Sarah, the wife of Abraham, also got herself into a “nice mess” when she decided she knew a better plan than God’s plan.  Ishmael, the son of Abraham and Hagar was the result.  As a result of her trying to fix God’s plan, we now have a “nice mess” in the middle East.    Yet, God used her to produce a great nation of people to be His people (Genesis 16, 21).

We all get ourselves into some kind of a mess in our lives, but don’t lose heart.  God loves.  God forgives.  God uses every situation to His benefit if we allow Him to.  Seek His will, be obedient and when you fail, get up and make it right.  You never have to lose heart when you are a child of God.
