It's Only Words

The BeeGees both wrote and preformed the January 1968 song that often serves as one of the soundtracks of my mind: “It’s only words, but words are all I have…”

Ultimately my life is about WORDS. We are paid to talk, to craft His Words in a way to move people to actions, to cause them to consider their lives, to reassure them of the assurance that is for God’s People. And, often I will think “It’s only words, but words are all I have…” But it’s not the only WORDS song that has wormholes its way into my mind.

I often find Conway Twitty’s words from “That’s My Job” in my brain: “I make my living with words and rhyme, and all this tragedy, should go into my head and out instead, as bits of poetry.” I too make my living with words. And as I consider life it comes out in thoughts and lessons to strive to help people. But Twitty is confessional, and I am too. The evaluation of life should, it seems, easily flow out, but they don’t. I struggle, at times to the point of having to remind myself that this is my job.

And, of course, The Beatles 1966 classic: “Father McKenzie, Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear, No one comes near, Look at him working…”

Words, they are what we do. We strive to exalt the Lord with the words we craft, we endeavor to glorify the name of God as we communicate. We write, speak, teach, preach, pray millions of words each year. Many of those words are weighty. Often we struggle to find that right word. Hang in there. As you speak His Word He will bless you. And His Word will never return empty but will accomplish the purpose for which He sent them out! So, don’t quit, trust. It’s not only words, it’s HIS WORDS and they will not fail.
