Don’t Ever Quit (No Matter How Old You Are)!

In these weekly missives, we often talk about not quitting just because you have been disappointed, mistreated, or ridiculed. We talk about not quitting when elders don’t treat you like we think they should. We talk about not quitting because of persecution or discouragement, or even after being dismissed.

However, there is another side category we need to think about when it comes to continuing our work for the Lord. Some seem to think they are too old, or that because they are older they can’t be effective any longer. It is fascinating to see how many preachers do their greatest work in the latter days of their lives. It is astounding to know that the Lord can use us mightily to accomplish great things for the Kingdom.

While in India this week we learned about Christianity being brought to India for the first time. Apparently there were some failed attempts in getting the Gospel to this country. It seems that Americans had been denied a visa to be able to go to India. One brother overheard a conversation between two women who were discussing that their “denomination” had been successful because there was more allowance for people coming from Canada.

After hearing that conversation, this brother reached out to J.C. Bailey in Canada suggesting that he would be a great man for this work. At first Brother Bailey was slow to engage in this request. He finally decided to make his way to India and he did so for the first time just a few months before turning sixty. Brother Bailey converted many to the Lord and helped establish a preacher training school. He continued to be involved in this work until he was nearly ninety years of age.

It is amazing to hear accounts of men of God who did some of their greatest work for the Lord later in their lives. Perhaps you are reading these words and you are wondering if there is still work to be done in your advanced years. Brothers, while our work may not be the same later in our lives, there is still much that can be done. May God help us to work for Him until we are no longer able to work regardless of our age!
